WWU presentation (to be announced)

Award-winning civil rights scholar and activist Mike Honey will visit Bellingham. He will deliver a talk and showing of part of his recently completed documentary film “Love and Solidarity: James M. Lawson and Nonviolence in the Search for Workers’ Rights” (2016) at Western Washington University (WWU) in the late afternoon (T.B.A.), and present and sign his most recent and widely acclaimed book “To the Promised Land: Martin Luther King and the Fight for Economic Justice” (Norton 2018) at Village Books, Fairhaven.

“To the Promised Land” picks up the story of King’s organizing where most accounts leave off—in the second phase of the freedom movement, when King’s focus shifted after the passage of the 1964 Civil Rights Act and 1965 Voting Rights Act to emphasize economic justice. Honey updates our understanding of Martin Luther King, Jr.’s life and work, connecting him more thoroughly to the context in which he worked, and cementing his place as a leader of not only the civil rights movement but also the labor movement.

Mike is the author of several books about civil rights and labor history as well as a folksinger who has collaborated with Pete Seeger, among others. His book “Going Down Jericho Road: The Memphis Sanitation Strike, Martin Luther King’s Last Campaign” (2007) was the winner of the Robert F. Kennedy Book Award among others. He has been a recipient of numerous other awards and fellowships including those from the Guggenheim and Rockefeller foundations and the National Endowment for the Humanities.
