Salmon in Schools

Students Await a Special Delivery of Salmon Eggs

It’s that time of year again when NSEA’s Education Team is setting up aquariums in schools around Whatcom County. These aren’t for your typical aquarium fish — they’re for salmon eggs! Students are buzzing with anticipation for that exciting day in January when 250 eggs will be delivered. These classes will then raise those baby salmon until they are old enough to be released into a creek close to their school. Stay tuned for exciting updates about NSEA’s Salmon in Schools activity!

One Small Class Makes a Big Impact!

The fourth graders at Meadows Montessori School went on their Students for Salmon field trip on a City of Ferndale property on Schell Creek. With only eight students in the entire class, they still managed to fill both big gray bins to the brim with invasive Himalayan blackberry – that’s nearly 100 gallons of weeds! This crew created room for more native plants to grow, helping Schell Creek and the salmon, and other wildlife that call it home.
