Whatcom County Drought Status: Drought Emergency

Update

The June issue of Whatcom Watch reprinted “Drought Encourages No-Mow Native Gardens” by Cheryl Lovato Niles under the standing head, “Twenty Years Ago.”

Editor’s Note: When this article was written twenty years ago, the state was undergoing a drought. Whatcom County is currently one of seven counties with a drought advisory. Three counties, Kittitas, Yakima and part of Benton have a drought declaration.

Since then, on June 5, the Department of Ecology (Ecology) issued a Drought Emergency Declaration for 19 watersheds that include all of Whatcom and Skagit counties, and portions of Snohomish, King, Pierce, Lewis, Thurston, Okanagan, Chelan, Clallam, Jefferson and Ferry counties.
